THINGS TO KNOW

PERFORMERS

  • Arrive early, sign up at the venue, bring your instrument, equipment or backing tracks, and keep your set time in mind, being mindful of the other performers time plus the venue closing time.
  • Most venues do not have instruments, so you would need to bring these along with you. Please check with the venue or the organizer if they have larger instruments such as a drum set or keyboard/piano.
  • Registrations via walk-ins to the venue are “first come, first perform”, or at the discretion of the host.
  • Depending on time constraints, most open mics will have you perform 2 pieces and, time permitting, might have performers for another round.
  • Backing tracks could be either played from your own device or shared with the host/sound engineer for them to play.
  • At the venue’s discretion, especially for family friendly places, you may be asked to ensure no swearing or lewd lyrics are in the pieces you perform.
  • There are sometimes social media personnel that are recording for the purpose of posts and stories – you are allowed to request not to be recorded.
  • Open mics are judgment-free zones – the community loves to support fresh voices.

AUDIENCE

  • Come to listen, cheer, and maybe join a jam if you feel inspired.
  • Please ensure to respect the performer by keeping your conversations low, no heckling or shouting at the performer.
  • You are welcome to provide constructive feedback if needed and following the hosts instructions.
  • For Spoken Word events, because of the nature of the performance, absolute silence is required. To show appreciation during the performance, instead of clapping, you are encouraged to snap your fingers. After the performance is done, normal applause is encouraged.
  • Most venues will require a minimum charge spend ranging from AED 30 to AED 80, redeemable against F&B. Please respect this requirement as the venue is offering their space for the open mic with their regular customers not necessarily finding space.
  • Even if the venue doesn’t put forward this minimum charge requirement, please accord them respect by at least purchasing something from them.
